Watch: My Life Directed by Nicholas Winding Refn

“You know you have made great cinema when half love it and half hate it”

– Nicolas Winding Refn

Check out this trailer for the upcoming fly-on-the-wall documentary, My Life Directed by Nicholas Winding Ref:

Nicholas Winding Refn has quickly become my favorite modern director. Between Drive, Valhalla Rising, the Pusher trilogy and Bronson, the man is a golden cinema machine. This new documentary, directed by Refn’s wife, Liv Corfixen, chronicles his relatively sudden rise to stardom and the troubled, shaky production of his most recent film, Only God Forgives. From the trailer, you can see that Refn was clearly doubting himself behind the scenes throughout the entire shoot. His rabid fanbase’s lofty expectations are hitting him hard and causing him to question his vision for this upcoming creation.

As it turned out, Only God Forgives would prove to be Refn’s most divisive film, drawing mixed opinions from both critics and fans alike. I happened to adore this movie, but plenty of Refn’s loyal fans were turned off by the long periods of silence in this symbolism-heavy follow-up to his nearly universally beloved previous film, Drive.

I haven’t seen My Life yet, but I’m eager to give it a chance. From the trailer alone, this seems to be an intimate portrait of the artist in his private moments.

The film will be released theatrically and on VOD on February 27.
